Introducing the "Sulfur-Flex Kit"

A Solution for the Export and Use of Used Tadano Cranes in Countries
Where Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel is Unavailable

Tadano Ltd. will soon release the "Sulfur-Flex Kit", as described in this press release.

1. Background

Used Tadano rough terrain cranes that comply with Japan's 2011 and later applicable emissions regulations for diesel-powered special motor vehicles may suffer from engine troubles and performance issues caused by low grade fuel (fuel with a high sulfur concentration) when exported and used in regions where ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD: sulfur concentration 15 ppm or less) is not readily available.

In response, Tadano has developed the Sulfur-Flex Kit, which allows modifications to the crane specifications to conform to the emissions regulations and fuel conditions of the country or region where the crane is imported and used, and thereby reduce such engine trouble and performance issues.
With a Sulfur-Flex Kit, customers considering exporting and operating a used Tadano crane in these regions can ease concerns about engine or surrounding equipment trouble caused by the use of low grade fuel.

2. Supported models (as of March 1, 2022)

GR-250N-3 (Installed engine: Mitsubishi 6M60-TLE3BA)
*Certain conditions apply to the installation of the Sulfur-Flex Kit. Please see the attached Q&A for details.

Attachment: Q&A

Q1: What is the Sulfur-Flex Kit?
A1: With the installation of this kit, the diesel particulate filter ("DPF"), an exhaust gas after-treatment system, and engine model nameplate are removed, and modifications such as ECU replacement and software rewrite are carried out.

Q2: What kinds of trouble can occur when low grade fuel (fuel with a high sulfur concentration) is used in a vehicle that complies with Japan's 2011 and later emissions regulations for diesel-powered special motor vehicles?
A2: Increased sulfur in the fuel can damage the DPF or other exhaust gas after-treatment system and exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), and lack of access to conforming oil can result in rapid DPF clogging and other problems.

Q3: Is it possible to buy just the Sulfur-Flex Kit and install it outside of Japan?
A3: It is not possible to buy just the kit. The kit can only be installed at Tadano service distributors in Japan.

Q4: Where can I buy a crane with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed?
A4: To buy a crane with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed, please contact the Service Group of Tadano IMES Ltd.

Q5: Are there conditions that apply when buying a crane with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed?
A5: There are. Because installation of the Sulfur-Flex Kit means that the machine does not comply with the emissions regulations of Japan, the United States, Canada, EU member nations, and other countries (including laws, rules, and other types of regulations; hereafter collectively referred to as "emissions regulations"), the machines cannot be exported to or operated in countries where emissions regulations exist. Customers must submit a written pledge regarding this point.

Q6: Can a product with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed be restored to its original specifications?
A6: No. When the Sulfur-Flex Kit is installed, the engine no longer complies with emissions regulations and it is not possible to restore the original compliant engine.

Q7: What warranty applies to engines with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed?
A7: No warranty is provided for engines with the Sulfur-Flex Kit installed.
